NVTA Grant Approval for the Van Buren Road Extension project
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA —the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) approved $179 million in funding for the Van Buren Road North Extension project, a major investment in Prince William County's transportation future. The project will extend Van Buren Road 2.5 miles from Route 234 (Dumfries Road) to Cardinal Drive, creating a new four-lane divided roadway that includes a bridge over Powell's Creek, a 10-foot shared use path, and a 5-foot sidewalk. This long-planned connection will provide a much-needed alternative north-south route parallel to I-95 and Route 1 — corridors that are critical to regional mobility but increasingly overburdened.
The benefits of the Van Buren Road North Extension reach well beyond a new stretch of pavement. Traffic analyses conducted for local and state planning studies have found that the project will reduce congestion, improve throughput, and reduce fatalities and serious injuries on existing roadways by adding capacity to the surrounding network.
This project is also a catalyst for smart regional growth. A portion of the extension lies within the newly designated Fettler Park/Dumfries Regional Activity Center, an area the County has targeted for transit-oriented, mixed-use development. By improving safety, easing congestion, and expanding connectivity for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders alike, the Van Buren Road North Extension represents a forward-looking investment in the community's quality of life and economic vitality. Prince William County thanks the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority for its partnership and its commitment to building a safer, better-connected region.
